Prostate cancer

In Sweden, the most common reason for a man being diagnosed with prostate cancer is an investigation of elevated values of the blood test PSA, prostate-specific antigen.

PSA is a protein that is produced in the prostate gland and is abundant in the seminal fluid. PSA is naturally found in small amounts in the blood.

The PSA level in the blood rises with age and in prostate diseases such as inflammation, benign enlargement, and prostate cancer.

PSA tests can be used during routine health checks to detect early stages of prostate cancer. This has both advantages and disadvantages.
