The liver

The liver has two large parts, called the right and left lobes. The gallbladder is located below the liver, along with parts of the pancreas and intestines.


The liver and these organs work together to digest, absorb and process food. Hepatitis can also have non-infectious causes, including excessive drinking, drugs, allergic reactions or obesity. As a result of cirrhosis, the liver releases fluid (ascites) into the abdomen, which becomes bloated and heavy. In this rare disorder, an obscure process slowly destroys the bile ducts in the liver. Eventually, permanent scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) develops.






Pprimary sclerosing cholangitis: a rare disease with unknown causes, primary sclerosing cholangitis causes inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts in the liver. The most common type of liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, almost always occurs after cirrhosis is present. The liver is a large, fleshy organ located on the right side of the abdomen.
